Studios

There are many different workspaces at ArteSumapaz. We normally work with artists before their arrival to discuss their primary needs and allocate space appropriately. When available, you can work in other studios, too.

Communal Visual Arts Studio

Our main shared art-making space occupies a former farm building, with a double-height ceiling and large walls. The studio features ample natural light. Each workspace has moveable walls with which artists can mount artworks using pins or magnets.

Granero

A restored coffee-plantation barn houses our exhibition and performance space. Its foam-padded floor and large sliding doors provide space for movement work, performances, and exhibitions. It’s many people’s favorite place to watch the sunset.

Music Studio

The music studio is a 24-square-metre space beside the Stable studio, with an electric piano, Craviotto drum kit with a mix of Zildjian and Istanbul cymbals, as well as a variety of hand drums. Musicians in residence coordinate their use of the space.

Graphic Arts Studio

The graphic arts studio features an intaglio press. The studio also includes bookbindery equipment for hand-bookbinding.

3D Studio

The open-air 3D studio provides space for ceramics and other three-dimensional work. The studio has several wheels, as well as an electric and two gas kilns. Many artists harvest clay from the ground on the premises.

Materials

Artists should bring their own art materials. We don’t provide them, although there is a small collection of materials left behind by former residents.

Accommodation

The main house

The principal house at ArteSumapaz is a hacienda dating back over 100 years. Built primarily of adobe, it has tiled floors and a clay-tile roof; quieter in the rain! Residents share a dining room, library/living room, and a porch that wraps around three sides of the house.

Accommodation includes private rooms and shared rooms. All beds are queen-sized, with pillows, linens, towels, and mosquito netting provided. Rooms include a reading lamp, chair, writing table, rechargeable lantern, and laundry basket. Showers have electric water heaters, and weekly room cleaning is provided.

Private cabin

The private cabin is a few minutes’ walk from the main house, offering seclusion and privacy. Its sheltered patio has a hammock overlooking the valley, with space to relax or work outdoors.

Inside are a queen-sized bed with mosquito net, a private bathroom with shower, and a kitchenette with a water filter, two gas burners, cookware, and tableware. The cabin has Starlink internet through a separate router, and electrical sockets indoors and on the patio.
