You are here,

You are in the eastern cordillera of the Colombian Andes, about 100 kilometers south of Bogotá. In Colombia, the Andes Mountains split into three ranges: the Eastern, Central, and Western Cordilleras. You are at an altitude of 1,300 meters above sea level.

In the valley to the west  is the Magdalena River and in the distance, in the Central Cordillera, you can see  the snow-capped volcanoes Ruiz, Tolima and Santa Isabel. Towering above us to the east is Páramo de Sumapaz and beyond that are the tropical plains leading into the great Amazon Rainforest.

ArteSumapaz is located in an ecologically important region. The Sumapaz Páramo which is the largest high-altitude wetland in the world, is a protected area that together with a series of national and regional parks, preserve the biological connectivity with the Amazon Rainforest. Colombia is 42% rainforest. This biological connectivity creates a phenomena referred to as “flying rivers”, a water-producing weather system that emerges from this unique geography. Flying rivers are formed in the humid rainforest and travel into the mountains where they feed and nourish cloud forests in higher altitudes. The consequence is an important system of irrigating the northern Andes and a good part of the continent. This moisture and weather system is essential for climatic balance and the continuity of life on the planet. The environmental health of our bioregion (The Sumapaz) also contributes to the migration of wildlife and to the biological diversity of flora and fauna.

Colombia is a diverse country in many ways, both biologically and culturally. In addition to Spanish, 69 other native languages are spoken, most of which belong to Amazonian peoples. These people are the primary guardians of the rainforest; they belong to cultures that have inhabited these forests for over 10,000 years. They know better than anyone how to protect the forest: for millennia, they have lived in harmony in the ecosystems and understand themselves to be part of it. Colombia is at the forefront of global environmental stewardship led by indigenous councils.

Over the past forty years, more than 25 million hectares of rainforest have been returned to the original native inhabitants in collectively owned territories known as resguardos. Other territories have been preserved, in the national and regional park system. Among the largest in the Amazon region is Chiribiquete National Park, with 43,000 square kilometers of protected area.

However, these ecosystems are under severe pressure, with deforestation having the most impact. Cattle ranching, legal and illegal mining activities, agriculture, and logging for wood products devastate natural forests and alter weather systems, including especially the phenomena of “flying rivers” and the water-producing ecosystems of the Paramo Sumapaz. Raising awareness and creating a culture that values the importance of the rainforest is essential. It is also crucial to support indigenous knowledge of forest management and to find alternative systems of economic opportunities and conservation.

Welcome! You are here now, and you are part of this abundant ecosystem, which is essential to the future of human and more-than-human communities.

Glossary:

“Flying rivers” are massive flows of water vapor transported through the atmosphere, primarily originating from the Amazon rainforest, and impacting rainfall patterns across South America. These invisible aerial waterways are created by the vast amount of water released into the atmosphere through transpiration by the rainforest’s trees.

Paramo: A paramo is a high-altitude Andean ecosystem found in South America, characterized by its unique vegetation and crucial role in regulating water flow. These ecosystems, situated between the treeline and the snow line, are vital water sources for many Andean cities and are known for their high biodiversity.
